Autumn Haiku, 2012

by Neal Whitman, Poetry Prof

The turning of a season makes a change. Can you spare change? Certainly you cannot stop it. When you do what you feel impelled to do, you might say, “I couldn’t help myself.” While we do not control the seasons, do we control ourselves, or is it in the stars? Okay, I think you know where I am going here! The equinox invites us to question ourselves — all we do and all we believe. So, speaking of “spare change,” here is my two cents worth … plus one haiku for the season: We are born with temperament, but character is the willingness to shape it.
