Ancestral

January 17, 2010 | in Poetry

Descending
into the land
of childhood

a yellow-walled town
on the coast
of light

memory’s
turbulent landing

each rediscovery
of time flow
and place love
always new.

Birding

September 2, 2009 | in Poetry

by Margarita Engle

Motionless
in the forest
I watch
a raven’s flight

gunshots too close

must I explain
my own stillness
to wayward hunters?

Edible Blossoms

July 7, 2009 | in Poetry

by Margarita Engle

Rose petal jam, rosebud candy
carved into the shapes of people,
beasts, birds; syrup of violets,
the variations are soothing.

Even the names convey magic
mimosa butter sandwiches,
nasturtium sauce, marigold soup,
carnations for melancholy,

the fragrance of rose leaves and mint
for sleep, tucked in a pillow…dreams…

Visiting St. Francis

April 27, 2008 | in Poetry

by Margarita Engle

In Assisi
my father the artist
explained perspective,
form, and pigment,

but I was unable
to see anything beyond
the man in a winglike robe
speaking to birds

so calmly
that they understood
the wolves
must listen too.
