Thank you, Kathy. I love hearing you laughed out loud. When I read the story aloud (on my CD I Steal My Bicycle and other stories) I can hear the quaver in my voice as I battle my impulse to laugh at the end; but I mustn't so I don't botch the punchline.

Dear Todd,
You are a true writer. Writing, it is said, is but another name for conversation. Thank you for staring the conversation in our home - memories of Hanukkah and Christmas past. Now recall the year high school principal (not our "pal") Francis X. Cavanaugh called Kenny Green and me in for not standing at the Holiday Assembly when "O Come All Ye Faithful" was sung. Would have been in bigger trouble if he had known that from our seats we had sung "Hmmm, Hmmm, the Lord."

Peace on Earth, good will to men,
Neal Whitman the Poetry Prof

Oh, Todd, you captured the nuances of each grandmother SO well that I was laughing aloud as I read. You really "got" Rachel perfectly -- are you sure you never met my grandmother? But of course your story was so much more than funny. What a powerful look at families, expectations, and children's views of the world.
Peace on earth,
Elaine
